Burned Down/焼失

It was 3:30pm, October 5th, 2021. I was instantly frozen when I went out from the entrance. The very old wooden-made apartment stood in front of me was completely burned down. It took me for a while to understand what happened. Then I noticed that the old woman was sitting beside of me and staring at collapsed apartment quietly. I remember her. She was always with the old man who lived upstairs as the only inhabitant there with his dog. I often saw them having daily conversations and talking to the dog. I thought they a husband andwife but my wife taught me that they are not and not living together either. My wife goes out to work while I am a SOHO worker but she knows far more than me regarding our neighborhood. 

There were policemen, firefighters and some rubbernecking but I began to walk to the market nearby while thinking about what happened to that old man and his dog. Right after I came home, I started to google to find out his safety. It happened at 9am when I was getting into the fist deep non-rem sleep. It must be so loud outside but I didn’t wake up. I took hours but couldn't get any information except the fact. I watched almost all local TV news from evening to midnight but none of them showed. So I let myself to think that he and his dog are safe and began to have new life somewhere.

2021年10月5日の午後3時30分だった。外に出ると、一瞬で凍りついた。木造の古いアパートが全焼して、何が起こったのか理解するのに時間がかかった。側に老婆が座っていて、目の前の崩落した黒焦げのアパートを静かに凝視めていた。見憶えがある。唯一の住人だった老人と日常的な会話を交わしたり、飼い犬に話しかけたりしているのをよく見かけた。私はふたりを夫婦だと思っていたが、ワイフによると一緒に暮らしているわけではないらしい。彼女は出勤し、私はSOHOだが、近所のことははるかに私より詳しい。

警察官や消防士、野次馬たちが屯していたが、誰にも訊ねることなく近くの市場まで歩き出し、老人と犬に何が起こったのか想いを巡らせた。帰宅し、安否を確認するためにすぐに検索した。それは午前9時頃に起きたことで、私が最初の深いノンレム睡眠状態に入っていたところだった。外は相当うるさかったはずなのに目醒めなかった。結局、火事があった事実以外、何の情報も得られず、夕方から深夜までほとんどのテレビのローカルニュースでは放送もされなかった。だから、彼と彼の犬は無事で、どこかで新しい生活を始めているのだと思うことにした。
